Although I'm not a big New York Times fan, McKenzie Funk wrote an article for the "magazine section" of their website that captured my attention to the point of obsession, titled The Wreck of the Kulluck.
It's man against mother nature, and no matter how much time, money and resources they threw at the project, it failed. Spanning several years and costing somewhere north of half a billion dollars, it was a battle of wills and a most amazing adventure.
If it's not locked behind a pay-wall, I hope you find it as captivating as I did...
