Loosen seatbelts for comfort and keep them on while inflight. The 'may remove seatbelt' light and message aren't mandatory.
The weird thing to me is doing so is probably WAY more likely to keep you from breaking your neck in some type of turbulance than having them on would save you in a take off or landing crash.
