Please remind me who's money they keep wanting to give away...

BRIDGEPORT COUNCIL – The Bridgeport City Council meets 7 tonight at City Hall. Council members will consider an amended ordinance on brush and tree limb collection and  dispersing hotel occupancy tax dollars to the high school boys and girls basketball booster clubs  Wise County Messenger Update

Please remind me why our government donates tax revenue to charities they deem worthy? If there was ever sound reasoning against this form of collecting and dispersing tax revenue, it’s in this video, “Not Yours To Give” by Davy Crockett.
This money is not theirs to give to anyone. The government has no right to give public money to any charity or any special interest! Label me whatever you want, after you listen to the video linked above.
What’s even more perplexing is the timing, since the city of Bridgeport will probably lose millions from the bankruptcy of the hospital. (Hide and watch!)  Who will suffer this loss?  The citizens, businesses and property owners of Bridgeport through loss of services and/or rate, fee and tax increases.
If they can give money to sports boosters, they can lower the electricity rates, which are sky high and causing people to move out of the city limits.
It is the taxpayer’s money and should be used in the course of doing city business, not to pay for pizzas after ball games...  We, as individuals, should choose and give to our own charities, preferably from money acquired through a lesser tax burden...

This is a trend that shows no sign of abating. Essentially a shell game, new tax jurisdictions are instituted, replete with their own administrative bodies, ostensibly for the noblest of reasons - crime control, transit, libraries, parks.

As time passes, responsibilities that were once part of local or county budgets are pushed outside of those budgets - and then the budgets need to be increased again.

And the cycle repeats.

I'm a younger (25) guy and went to HS over in Graham. You see the same kind of stuff in most small towns. A few years back, the city pushed for $35 million to remodel the high school and upgrade the football field. Now, I will be the first to admit, those kids now have top notch facilities;
Something my friends and I never did. But the idea that investing that amount of money on high schools is baffling to me. You hear people say that the new turf will bring in playoff games... Yeah, and it'll take 20 years to pay it back. I believe in investing in the kids, but that charter bus for a playoff game doesn't help them win and neither do new uniforms.
