Reminds me of when I was on a MK51 5inch gun crew in the USCG. We were on REFTRA playing war games with the Navy. Our turret was on anti-aircraft duty under radar control.
The target we were tasked was towed on a cable by an aircraft. We hit the cable and parted it 5ft from the target. An unbeliveable shot! But we never knew it boxed up inside the gun mount. We were reloading and firing on a stopwatch every 8 seconds. In the meantime radar control was still following the target down to the water. Nobody gave a cease fire command.
On our last shot we broke 1 and burned the other 2 lifelines on the focsul because the gun was in the full stop position lower left.
