How Pasadena CA celebrates Independence Day

On July 4, 2009, the city of Pasadena, California, will celebrate independence by erecting checkpoints to search vehicles for fireworks. “Violators are subject to confiscation and impound of vehicles, up to one year in jail and fines up to $50,000,”…

John Adams is probably rolling over in his grave.

I had a law officer give me a ration of ____ awhile back, about some fireworks I had in my car.

Some friends and I were in Cottonwood Park in Grand Prairie, just talking.

Mr. Officer pulled up in his GPPD reserve station wagon (lame-o!), and commenced to grill us about whether we had any beer. We truly didn't, but that didn't deter him from his chest thumping and warnings that he'd haul us off to jail if he found any beer in our cars.

He asked to look in my car, and I curbed my sarcasm just a bit and told him to "go for it". There wasn't any beer, but there were some leftover fireworks from the 4th of July that I'd brought home from my grandparents'. He was clearly pretty disgusted by the lack of beer, so he gave me a chewing out about the fireworks and told me I shouldn't keep them in my car.

It was 1977.

Interestingly, and not because of that doofus, I don't think I've purchased any fireworks since.
